Halloween Week : Whimsical
October 18th, 2012 by Carrie Sellman | 5 Comments

Today is day four in our new cake series, EEEK It’s Halloween Week!  Five talented bakers were asked to create new designs inspired by Halloween.  To bring the spirit of the holiday to life in a modern cake design like none we had seen before.  Each baker was given a basic black and white color scheme and a specific genre, creating a week of inspiring cakes for everyone.  And today is we’re moving on to the Whimsical category.

This third Halloween cake comes to us from Yeni Monroy and her team at Dream Day Cakes®, located in Gainesville, Florida.  You probably remember Yeni from previous features on our site (like this Thing 1 & Thing 2 cake or this robot cake).  Her cakes are the perfect combination of precision and whimsy, creating magical designs with incredible attention to detail.  Yeni once again brings her signature style to the blog with an enchanting design capturing the playful side of Halloween.  Prepare to oooohh and aaaahh over this Bear-y Whimsical Halloween Cake!

Oh my goodness!  Where do we start?  Ridiculous cuteness from bottom to top!   A 3D pumpkin base is topped with topsy-turvy tiers of black and white.  Surrounded by the most loveable bears, dressed in costume and wearing big smiles.  They are so ready for some Halloween cake!  Spooky bats fly in the moonlight as the itsy-bitsy spider happily descends from a fanciful witch hat!  This cake simply cheers… Happy Halloween!

Fred from Dream Day Cakes shares the scoop on this design:

“The cake features 4 trick-or-treating bears dressed as a skeleton, mummy, vampire, and ghost.  Scrolls and topsy-turvy tiers keeps this cake whimsical and kids will immediately recognize the bears as wearing costumes. In showing that Halloween can be more fun than scary, even the spider (on the witch’s hat) is all smiles.”

This cake may include a vampire, skeleton, mummy and ghost… but it’s all fun, no fright!  The darling trick-or-treating bears are captivating for children of all ages.  You just can’t help but smile!  And who knew a spider could be so inviting and happy?!

Not only was this cake created to inspire you, but it was served at a very special event.  Fred from Dream Day Cakes tell us more :

“The cake was served to attendees of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Kickoff to a Cure event held at the University of Florida campus in Gainesville, Florida. More than $70k was raised for this foundation– we were truly honored to be a part of it.

We kept the black & white theme throughout the inside of the cake with our accent color of orange– trying to have fun with it. For example, the pumpkin tier was an almond cake with layers of pumpkin spice buttercream.  We also had a tier of chocolate cake with cookies & cream buttercream (with orange jimmies), as well as vanilla cake with chocolate and funfetti buttercream.”

A Halloween cake full of creativity, charm and whimsy… that also supported a good cause?  Just one more reason to love this cake!  As if all of the amazing details weren’t enough.  We didn’t even talk about the ingenious use of chevron or the gorgeous hand-cut Halloween lettering….!   What a delightful combination of genuine Halloween fun!

A huge thanks to Yeni and Fred at Dream Day Cakes® for sharing this Bear-y Whimsical Halloween Cake with us today!

Halloween Week : Glittery Glam
October 17th, 2012 by Carrie Sellman | 8 Comments

Today is day three in our new cake series, EEEK It’s Halloween Week!  Five talented bakers were asked to create new designs inspired by Halloween.  To bring the spirit of the holiday to life in a modern cake design like none we had seen before.  Each baker was given a basic black and white color scheme and a specific genre, creating a week of inspiring cakes for everyone.  So far we’ve seen the Classic Halloween category followed by the Modern Chic.  And today we’re moving on to Glittery Glam!!

This third Halloween cake comes to us from Rachael Teufel, owner of Intricate Icings Cake Design in Erie, Colorado.  Rachael has been inspiring us with her beautiful cakes for years now (like this tangerine and turquoise tango and this sugar burlap cake).  Once again, Rachael has us swooning over her sophisticated interpretation and elegant style.  While we’ve featured many dress-inspired cakes in the past (Rachael’s ruched design included), today’s feature takes the ‘From Dress to Cake’ concept to a whole new level!  It’s, by far, the most creative dress-inspired cake yet… and I simply cannot get enough!  Who knew a fashion icon could inspire a Halloween cake?  A fabulous Oscar De La Renta gown is transformed into a seriously wicked Halloween design, with sleek black and white stripes that will make your head spin!  Accented with just the right amount of purple glitter and flying bats, this cake is one part Beetlejuice and two parts Glittery Glam!

Okay, okay.  Quiet down with all that squealing.  Oh wait, that was me squealing!  For the umpteenth time!  Seriously.  Can you believe this cake!?!

Rachael of Intricate Icings gives us the insider scoop on her design:

“Glitz and Glam is totally up my ally when it comes to cake designs and I love a little sparkle, but then again what girl doesn’t?  I also love having an inspiration piece to guide my design process.  When I think of glitz and glam, I think of those gorgeous gowns on the red carpet.  I thought using a new fashion trend from 2013 would be glamorous, so I chose a gown designed by Oscar De La Renta, one of the world’s leading fashion designers.  This black and white striped gown even has a bit of a Beetle-juice feel to it … perfect for Halloween.”

Rachael of Intricate Icings talks about her technique:

“I first covered the cake in white fondant.  I added a piece of purple for the under-skirting and then used modeling chocolate to form the flowing fabric at the bottom of the dress.  Each black modeling chocolate stripe was hand placed onto the dress.  I hand cut two bats and glittered them along with the under-skirting using edible glitter of course.”

Seriously?!!  We just have to pause and talk about these stripes.  I love striped cakes and this is the ultimate in stripes.  Vertical stripes – check.  Horizontal stripes – check.  Diagonal stripes – check and check.  Softly flowing draped stripes?  Yep, got those too.  Folds upon folds of stripes…. seriously?  Oh my stripe-loving-goodness!  Talk about spectacular!   Just look how the front bottom fold lines up with the underlying stripes to create a perfect V!  The precision and attention to detail in these stripes is phenomenal!

If I had a ‘Queen of Stripes’ crown, I would now place it on Rachael’s head.  She has definitely earned the title with this cake!  Her impeccably tailored stripes, coupled with the purple glitter and glam bats, create the perfect cross between Beetlejuice and stylish wicked witch.  It’s Glittery Glam Halloween to the max!

A special thank you to Rachael of  Intricate Icings Cake Design for the breathtaking, glittery glam inspiration!  And to Revert Imaging for the incredible photography!

Halloween Week : Modern Chic
October 16th, 2012 by Carrie Sellman | 7 Comments

Today is day two in our new cake series, EEEK It’s Halloween Week!  Five talented bakers were asked to create new designs inspired by Halloween.  To bring the spirit of the holiday to life in a modern cake design like none we had seen before.  Each baker was given a basic black and white color scheme and a specific genre, creating a week of inspiring cakes for everyone.  Yesterday’s cake was all about Classic Halloween Fun.  And today’s cake is made Modern Chic!

This second Halloween cake comes to us from Jacki Fanto, owner of Blissfully Sweet in Sydney Australia.  You probably remember Jacki from previous features on our site (like her incredible design in our Beach Week Series).  Jacki once again amazes us with her creative style and artistic interpretation of the theme.  After finding her inner Van Gogh, Jacki captures the beautiful darkness of the original Starry Night painting, but with a chic Halloween twist.  It is sugar art, DEFINED!  Seriously, you are going to flip out at the brilliance of this design.  And then by the flawless execution.  I honestly don’t think words can do this cake justice.  It is beyond exquisite and you simply must see it!  So without further ado…. I’m honored to present this Starry Halloween Night Cake!

Seriously, I cannot stop swooning!  From the ingenious concept to the incredible technique, I am in love!  Jacki brings her concept to life with with small impressionistic-style dots and dashes of buttercream.  Shades of black and grey swirled with purple and orange.  Flanked by a pumpkin patch at the base and a bright crescent moon at the top.  What a gorgeous Halloween scene!  Let’s see more, shall we!

Jacki of Blissfully Sweet shares the inspiration for her design:

“I was very excited to be asked to design and make a cake for Halloween week and even more excited when I learned that my genre was “Modern Chic”. Let the fun begin!

I wanted to create something that was not overtly Halloween with all the usual bits and bobs, but something that was sophisticated enough that it has a Halloween feel while being chic and glamorous. I am a HUGE art fan and especially impressionism. I love Van Gogh and his painting “Starry Night” is one of my all time favourite paintings. It always had a dark look to me and when I was thinking ideas, I knew I wanted to have an art focus to it and I kept coming back to this painting. I decided to make a Starry Night cake version.”

Jacki of Blissfully Sweet shares the scoop on her display:

“I started to think about my back drop and how this cake would be displayed.  I wanted it to look like it was framed in a gallery.  Therefore, my backdrop was a simple black fabric wall with empty gold gilded frames that we used to both frame and adorn the cake.  A willow branch just gave that extra touch.”

Jacki of Blissfully Sweet talks about the structure and technique:

“When it came to the structure of the cake, I decided on ultra modern with tilted and extended tiers.  Those top tiers really did help to tell the story of the painting.  I wanted to challenge myself also and do something a little out of my own comfort zone.  For me, this is piping!  The Starry Night scene was all hand piped in different shades of black, white with orange and purple being my highlight colours.  To add dimension, I gave the entire cake a watercolour finish first to give the 3d illusion.  For my playful touch, the village that is usually in the bottom of the painting, became a pumpkin village and the pumpkins were all handmade from fondant.

When it was all finished and I looked back, I was thrilled with how this cake turned out.  To me, it is a modern and chic ode to Halloween.”

You’re speechless, aren’t you?!  That’s because this cake is beyond words!  I seriously cannot come up with an adjective worthy of describing this cake.  Spectacular?  Phenomenal?  Mesmerizing?  Needless to say, I am in awe!  Aren’t you?

A huge thank you to Jacki of Blissfully Sweet for inspiring us with her stunning Starry Halloween Night Cake!  It is most definitely a modern and chic ode to Halloween!  And to One Love Photography for the gorgeous images!

Golden Chevron Cake
September 19th, 2012 by Carrie Sellman | 4 Comments

Today’s featured cake is a sophisticated design with great white on white texture, modern lines and subtle gold accents.  Crisp white fondant is perfectly polished, creating an ultra tailored appearance.  Delicate sugar broaches, strings of sugar pearls and diamond-like gems add a touch of luxury to an already refined design.  And then there is the gorgeous chevron.  Thin lines of hand-painted gold chevron!  Oh chevron… you’re a trend worth keeping.  Especially when used so exquisitely.  All topped with a statement-making fantasy flower.  Prepare to swoon over this elegant Golden Chevron Cake, created by Jennifer Bratko, owner of  Beyond Buttercream in San Francisco.

Elegant Chevron Cake by Beyond Buttercream | TheCakeBlog.com

Jennifer of Beyond Buttercream shares the story behind her design:

“I wanted to take 3 display cakes to a bridal show I was participating in.   I had the other 2 cakes designed and done, but I was literally looking at 4 tiers of freshly covered Styrofoam and had no idea what I was going to do.  I was running out of time, so I quickly sketched something out in less then 5 minutes around using some new gem molds I picked up at ICES, committed to it, then got to work.”

Elegant Chevron Cake by Beyond Buttercream | TheCakeBlog.com

More from Jennifer of Beyond Buttercream:

“The theme of this cake is ‘clean’.  Clean lines, clean patterns, and smooth fondant.  I wanted to add some bling but wanted it understated, modern and sophisticated.

The bottom tier’s sugar broaches are from a gem mold that I added an additional layer with a daisy cutter.  After everything was dry I handpainted gold details and added disco dust.  The next tier I handpainted really thin gold chevrons (it’s probably been done, but I haven’t seen it).  Then I was stumped.  Out came my pearl molds that I topped each point off with a small isomalt diamond.   The top tier has large isomalt diamonds with disco dust accents.  The final touch is the flower topper.   I made a fantasy flower but wanted to bring in the broach elements from the bottom tier.  I decided to color the center a lovely mint, which I think is a great subtle way to add color to a cake without overdoing it.  As a finishing touch, I dusted the flower with Touch of Gold Platinum dust.”

I am seriously smitten with this design!  It’s impeccably groomed and oh-so-ladylike.  And as an extra bonus… this classic chic design incorporates several hot trends right now (chevron, broaches and pearls) but would easily stand the test of time.  What’s not to love?!

A special thank you to Jennifer Bratko of  Beyond Buttercream for sharing her Golden Chevron Cake with us today!  It is beyond gorgeous!

Vintage Toys & Burlap by Royal Bakery | TheCakeBlog.com

Lesley of Royal Bakery shares the story behind her design:

“This shower cake was created for a vintage toy-themed ‘Baby-Q.’  The dad-to-be’s mother had saved all his childhood tin trucks and used these to decorate tables laid with white butcher’s paper and burlap runners.  Metal sand pails full of crayons, pinwheels, spinning tops and yo-yos encouraged children to draw on the tablecloths and have fun the old-fashioned way. Taking pride of place was the dad-to-be’s old red and white tricycle, fully restored by his mom and ready for the new addition to the family.  She asked that the cake feature a much-loved Tonka truck complete with dents and scratches, along with other vintage toys in a color scheme of red, dark teal, linen and burlap.”

Thing One & Thing Two Cake

Dr. Seuss himself would be excited about today’s cake.  It’s playful.  It’s charming.  It’s just down right seussical!  Created for a twin’s first birthday celebration, this design brings Seuss’s classic book,  The Cat in the Hat, to life.  From the Cat’s iconic striped hat to his umbrella and ball, no detail is too small.  But the real stars of this cake are Thing One and Thing Two, perfectly adapted in honor of the birthday boy and girl.  Their kites are flying and the sky is the limit!  Join me in this fanciful cake world, created by Yeni Monroy and her team at Dream Day Cakes®.  It’s an incredibly whimsical Thing One & Thing Two Cake!

Dr Seuss Thing 1 & 2 Cake by Dream Day Cakes | TheCakeBlog.com

Fred from Dream Day Cakes shares the story behind this design:

“Initially, the grandmother contacted us.  Celebrating her grandchildren’s first birthday was going to be a fun event and she wanted to know if we could do Thing 1 & 2 cake pops (oldest twin is thing 1, younger is thing 2).  We thought the idea was awesome and got her in the book.

About a week later, the children’s mother came into the bakery and thought it would be awesome to add a small cake, 2 smash cakes, and some cupcakes — all thing 1&2 themed.  We loved the idea and started to get pretty excited about the event.”

Dr Seuss Thing 1 & 2 Cake by Dream Day Cakes | TheCakeBlog.com

More from Fred from Dream Day Cakes :

“Yeni loves Dr. Seuss’ style and I think it really brings her A-game. For the cake, Thing 1 (Thomas) and Thing 2 (Katherine) fly their kites in the middle of a story. Reds, Blues, and Whites galore. Flat, edible cut-outs were hand drawn/painted and then added to the cake to make a really fun 3D effect (with the layers of cutouts).

Yeni still won’t tell me how she did the kite strings. That blew me away.”

Dr Seuss Thing 1 & 2 Cake by Dream Day Cakes | TheCakeBlog.com

Fred is right…. those kite strings are crazy good.  They’re suspended in thin air!  But then again, everything about this cake is crazy good!  And I love how the design completely encircles the cake.  The back side of the cake is just as fabulous as the front!  If you look closely below, you’ll see that the Fish is actually jumping out of a 3D fish bowl attached to the back of the cake.  Genius!

Mod Black & White Swirls
September 11th, 2012 by Carrie Sellman | 5 Comments

Today’s featured cake is as sleek as it is modern.  A not-so-ordinary cake created for a not-so-ordinary wedding.  Inspired by the bride’s lace fascinator, this design is strikingly bold and simply beautiful!  Gorgeous hand-painted swirls embellish all three tiers, softly contrasting the crisp black and white color combo.  It’s the perfect combination of graphic and glamorous, retro and chic.  All perched upon one fabulous black cake stand.  Let’s take a look at this Mod Black & White Swirls Cake, created Jamie Hoffman, owner of Yuma Couture Cakes in Yuma Arizona.

Mod Black & White by Yuma Couture Cakes | TheCakeBlog.com

Jamie of Yuma Couture Cakes shares the story her design:

“When I met with the bride, I could immediately tell the design was going to be out of the ordinary.  I was presented with bright red peacock feathers, black and white checkerboard dance floor photos, and an absolutely out of this world red, black and white feather and lace fascinator that she planned to wear down the aisle, with a curious little black and white hand painted clip that was attached to the fascinator.  I knew that design would need to be the inspiration for her cake.  Initially I sketched out three tiers with only one little swoopy design and some gumpaste feathers for the middle tier, intending to be minimalist, but immediately scribbled out what I drew and covered all three tiers with it.  The bride was thrilled!  On cake day, I carefully free hand painted the fondant covered tiers with black gel color and several different script style brushes.”

Mod Black & White by Yuma Couture Cakes | TheCakeBlog.com

Don’t you just love the whole vibe of this display?  The hand-painted swirly tiers, each embellished with a single black band.  Not only is the cake a stunner, but check out that cake stand!  You know how I love cake stands…  and every cake deserves a stand as fabulous as this one!  It’s slender sleek appearance creates the perfect pedestal for this incredible cake!

A special thank you to Jamie Hoffman of Yuma Couture Cakes for sharing her Mod Black & White Swirls cake with us today!  We love it’s bold creativity and style!
