Ruffle Mermaid Cake
April 13th, 2012 by Carrie Sellman | 8 Comments

My friend Kim at The TomKat Studio recently hosted the most lovely Mermaid Party for her daughter Kate’s birthday.  The entire party was beyond exquisite!  In fresh shades of blue and aqua with a crisp, clean, elegant feel.  Those are not words typically used to describe a ‘character themed’ party!  But Kim took her daughter’s love of Ariel and turned it into a delightfully chic kingdom under the sea.

Needless to say, I am thrilled to bring you an exclusive on the gorgeous cake!  Layers of delicate ruffles shaded from dark to light aqua are surrounded by a beach of sandy sugar.  Ariel’s ocean never looked so inviting!  Featuring a single string of pearls, a starfish and the signing mermaid herself…  prepare to swoon over this Ruffled Mermaid Cake created by Melissa at Decadent Delights!

Kim told us a little about her daughter’s cake:

“My mom and I added the ribbon, pearls, starfish, sand dollar and Ariel to the cake after my baker, Melissa from Decadent Delights delivered it.  We put it on the milk glass cake stand and added the “sand” which was Sugar in the Raw.

This design creates the perfect stage for a little mermaid… and is seriously gorgeous enough to be a bridal cake!  Minus Ariel, you have a ruffled ombre cake set for a for a beach wedding or bridal shower!

Isn’t it stunning?!  I am a huge fan of ‘character cakes’ that are inspired by the character rather than a literal interpretation.  And this cake is the perfect example of how to achieve this!  Little girls and big girls can all agree on a cake as beautiful as this!

Kudos to Melissa at Decadent Delights on her incredible Ariel-inspired Mermaid Cake!  We absolutely love it!  And a very special thanks to Kim at The TomKat Studio for sharing this ruffled loveliness with us today!  If you haven’t already, you must see this entire Mermaid Party!

Rainbow Heart Cake

Erin from Wild Orchard shared a few thoughts about her rainbow design:

“This cake is just full of things that are very me.  I love rainbows, color, graphic patterns and all things bright and cheery!  The inspiration for this cake came directly from a sweatshirt I wore as a kid (in the 80’s).  While I love to do very fancy pretty wedding work, I also love a cake that is more whimsical and fun.”

Noah’s Ark Cake
April 6th, 2012 by Carrie Sellman | 4 Comments

Today’s featured cake is a clever update on a timeless classic.  Noah’s Ark is a popular theme for first birthdays, baptisms and christenings.  Today’s cake take this concept to a whole new level.  Specifically, to the top of the mountain!  Adorable fondant animals are paired up two-by-two as they make their climb… to the top of the mountain where the ark awaits!  We’re loving this precious Noah’s Ark Cake created by the talented Leony at Ma’ Cake in Sydney, Australia.

Noah's Ark Cake - Baptism or First Birthday Cake

Leony of Ma’ Cake shared a little about her inspiration for this design:

“The original inspiration came from a client requesting Noah’s Ark on dry land. It was quite a large party so there was a need for a reasonably large cake. Rather than making the Ark very large, which would have dominated the animals, I thought it would be good to build a cake into the design. I thought about what the Ark represented and how big the flood was. Even the tallest mountain was flooded, so why not build a mountain with the Ark on top and have the animals make their way up to the Ark in pairs? The path carved into the maintain is what brought it all together. I was able to place elements at every level without them seeming out of place. I’m very proud of the cake, which has become one of my most popular designs.”

How brilliant are these little cuties climbing up to the top of the cake?  The winding road is such a fun way to showcase so many pairs of animals!  Let’s get a another look…

Back behind those charming hippos is a pair of snakes, waiting their turn to slither!  At the very top, already loaded into the ark, are the rhinos…zebras… and lions!  Oh my!

Completely, utterly adorable!  This cake would be perfect for a first birthday, baptism or even a baby shower.  Just think how charming would it be to celebrate twins!

A special thank you to Leony at Ma’ Cake for sharing her incredible cake creation with us!  It is truly delightful!  Happy Weekend everyone!
